A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM DR. BERNHOFT:
HOW I PRACTICE MEDICINE AND WHY:
Once upon a time, I was a budding professor of surgery. I did the general surgery residency at UCSF, a fellowship in London in liver and pancreatic surgery, published a couple dozen research papers and joined the clinical faculty of the University of Washington.
After I got sick, I got well with the help of Dr Phil Ranheim, who practices Environmental Medicine. I retrained in Environmental Medicine, which deals with allergy, and with the various toxins which cause most disease. (According to the CDC, virtually all chronic illness results from the interaction between genetic vulnerability and environmental exposure.) After a couple years, LDA had cured most of my allergies, I had my liver working properly and scientific detoxification had given me back excellent health, which I still enjoy.
Toward the end of my training in Environmental Medicine, I attended a conference of the Institute for Functional Medicine, and was hooked. I read their Textbook of Functional Medicine cover to cover, studying their approach, and now practice Functional and Environmental Medicine, with excellent results (when people stay with the program).
One word of warning: we don’t have any quick fixes. If you want a pill to mask your symptoms for a while, don’t come to us. We don’t throw pills at symptoms. We deal with underlying causes of disease, and recovery of health takes time. You didn’t get sick overnight, and you won’t get well overnight. In my case, it took me around a year and a half to get back most of my health. Couple years after that to finish the job, and ongoing maintenance now (organic diet, pure water, sauna once or twice a week, occasional chelation) to maintain health.
Everything we do has science behind it, and proven results. We can’t fix everything, but we can help a lot of people get a lot better. If that sounds like what you need, give us a call.
SPECIAL NOTICE as of March 2016: Recently it has been suggested on social media that I will provide letters for vaccine exemptions for patients who ask for them.
We will not provide exemption letters outside of the officially approved indications set forth by the Medical Board, based on medical necessity.
